VISION 

To investigate and interpret how innovations have helped change and shape civilisations through time.  

INTENT 

Our curriculum inspires pupils’ curiosity about the past in order for them to develop key skills as a historian. By considering the legacy left from the past, and the innovations that have shaped the world we live in today, the children will develop a curiosity about all things historical. Through using high quality primary and secondary sources, they have the opportunity to discern information, considering its bias. The children will become critical thinkers and be able to ask perceptive questions. 

In EYFS and KS1 the children will learn about their place within history, beginning to make connections between events in the past and our lives today. Continuing into KS2, the children then begin a chronological journey through time. By learning History sequentially, the children will understand how past events can impact upon future events and how we have evolved and changed over time. We consider simultaneous historical events happening around the world to give the children a holistic overview of our development to modern day.  

IMPLEMENTATION 

History is carefully planned and structured around the above key principles so that a coherent curriculum is delivered by enthusiastic and knowledgeable teachers. Planning is sequenced and is always driven by using a key question.  

We believe it is vital that substantive knowledge is embedded and recapped every lesson. We do this through quizzes, pictures, questioning and retrieval. This ensures the children have understood and remembered previous lessons and information taught and made links with prior learning.  

Our curriculum enables children to draw comparisons and make connections between different time periods and their own lives. The children will be given a variety of experiences both in and out of the classroom and the local area. We will create memorable learning opportunities for all children to further support and develop their understanding. 

The repetition and revisiting of key concepts (such as ‘Women through History’ and ‘Black Lives Matter’) ensures the children have a detailed grasp of these concepts in a variety of historical contexts. The Immersive room at North Worcester offers the children a unique insight into History. From experiencing a Tudor art gallery with talking portraits of monarchs to crouching in a rat-infested trench in World War One, we aim to bring History to life and ignite a lifelong love of learning through frequently using this engaging technology. An abundance of new, exciting and interactive physical resources means the children can literally hold history in their hands. 

IMPACT 

As historians, the children will be discerning and critical thinkers, enabled to establish whether sources are reliable and where to find them. Inspired to continue to learn more about the past and be ready for their next step in their historical education. They will be enlightened by what has come before them and aware that we all play our part in History.
