North Worcester English Principles

Here at North Worcester we pride ourselves on giving all children memorable experiences in their learning. Through our English lessons’ children are exposed to a variety of texts from fiction to non-fiction and all genres of writing. At NWPA, we base planning on ‘The Literary Curriculum’.

This approach is book-based approach, designed to help teachers access high quality resources and network through training. The Teach Through a Text approach was created so that there was a consistent, cohesive pedagogy used across a school.

We immerse children in a text, giving children the excitable ‘hooks’ (crocodiles in forest school, mysterious guests, a royal delivery) in order to excite the children’s own ideas to create writing opportunities within an English lesson. We enable children to use their own imagination and knowledge to inform what they are going to write. Throughout our lessons there are multiple opportunities within sequences to explore genres, and remind children continuously of the key writing skills such as punctuation, spelling and grammar.

Our Aims:

The national curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:

• read easily, fluently and with good understanding
• develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
• acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
• appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
• write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
• use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
• are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate
